Sawmill

B Knight & Son ltd are a traditional sawmill, one of only 164 still in existence in the whole of the UK (2017)

A family business established in 1874 still cutting hardwood and softwood timbers from sustainable sources. Oak, Larch and Douglas Fir can be cut to order from our extensive stock of round logs to your specific requirements.

Our in-house bespoke structures and posts are manufactured using timbers cut on our own bandsaw.

Freshly sawn timber, or green timber, has a wide range of versatile uses from large structures to decorative in-house timbers.

Oak is synonymous with strength and tradition, used in heavy construction and posts to mantles and furniture making, it defines character and quality. With the timber being “green” you may expect some cracking or shrinkage as the wood dries. Oak is strong, hard, heavy and dense with a very close grain and, due to its high tannin content, is resistant to insect and fungal infestations.

Larch is a durable Redwood with a straight grain and small knots. It is reddish in colour with contrasting white sap rings. It has fine texture and a high definition of grain. Low maintenance and does not need treating, when allowed to weather it becomes a silvery grey colour. Larch is often used in joinery and cladding projects as well as structures and posts.

Douglas Fir is an evergreen tree of the conifer family. Douglas Fir has superior strength to weight ratio with it having the highest strength rating of any softwood. Its properties are very similar to Oak but Douglas Fir is 30% lighter in weight making fresh sawn Douglas Fir an excellent alternative. The wood dries rapidly with small dimensional movement. It is relatively easy to work, with good machining qualities. It turns, planes and shapes well and can be sanded to a smooth finish.
